WHAT ATE THE VINE
Lia Sturua’s novel of perceptions, emotions and sensations’ was written in 1994-2000. It is her first prose work, which certainly intensifies interest towards the book which tells about her feelings with the partial use of the stream-of-consciousness technique. At times it might seem autobiographic, especially that the narrative touches upon the events of recent past the country went through. The author’s chief concern is common for many, which makes it easier to sympathize with the novel: black-outs, bread queues, fires lit in the streets to keep people warm, alienated society wearing two faces – one for the outsiders, the other for the family, superficial, void ritualistic actions, freezing friends, the fear of a bullet deliberately aimed at you or accidentally hitting you in the dark.
