THE EXCHANGE
ELBAKIDZE MARINA
The action takes place on the coast, in a zone of ethnic conflict. The main hero, Gogi, is trying to get his son, who went to war as a volunteer, released from captivity. Gogi has Paata to help him do so. Paata and his childhood friend Batali, who is now in the opposite camp, are in charge of the process of exchanging prisoners.
In the course of several days of fruitless searching, Gogi, who is an actor by profession, recalls important fragments of his own past life. In the present, alongside scenes from the past, Gogi becomes a witness of brutal war incidents: digging graves for fighters who have been killed and putting the corpses in them, interrogating and executing a captured ‘contract soldier’, bombing a town…
Gogi considers that the business of searching for his son has been too protracted and takes up the initiative himself. The car, in which he is sitting together with members of a fighting group, is blown up by a mine. Nobody knows which side has mined the area.
Paata goes on looking for Gogi’s son. Batali informs Paata that the lad, after being taken prisoner, was killed when he got into an argument with the fighters.
