NACHKEBIA DAUR

Born in 1960 in the village of Pakuash in Ochamchira district, Abkhazia. In 1977 he matriculated from boarding school No. 1 in Sukhumi. In 1982 he graduated from Tbilisi State University’s physics faculty. In 1983 and 1984 he worked as a junior research in the chair of general physics at Abkhazia’s State University. During the Abkhaz war of 1992-93 he was the chief editor of Abkhazia’s Russian radio service. From 1985 to 1996 he was a literary consultant to the Abkhaz Writers’ Union. Since 1997 he has been the chief secretary of the commission for the D. I. Gulia state award for literature, art and architecture. As a member of the Abkhaz Union of Writers and Union of Journalists, he has written several books of prose, journalism and a novel. His works have been translated into English, Serbian, Azerbaijani, Armenian and Georgian. From 2001 to 2004 he was the editor in chief of Aitaira (Resurrection), an opposition movement journal. In 2007-08 he took Advanced Literary Courses at the Gorky Literary Institute in Moscow. In April 2010 he was appointed director of the Abkhaz State Publishing House. From 20 October 2011 to 10 October 2014 he was the Republic of Abkhazia’s minister of education.
