GABRIADZE REZO

Born in 1936 in the city of Kutaisi, Georgia, is a writer, screenwriter, stage director, painter, sculptor and puppeteer. He has written over 35 screenplays, including such influential films as Don’t Grieve, Mimino, The Eccentrics and Kin-Dza-Dza. At some point Rezo Gabriadze, frustrated by the lack of intellectual freedom in the Soviet Union, turned to puppet theatre as a hitherto overlooked way to tell his dramatic stories: in 1981 he founded and even now still heads the Marionette Theatre based in Tbilisi. From its very first performance the audience’s hearts were won over by this theatre. His productions Alfred and Violetta, The Autumn of our Springtime, Ramona and The Battle of Stalingrad brought the theatre recognition from international audiences and critics alike. Since the 1990s, Gabriadze has also worked abroad, where he has staged numerous productions. The theatre company has toured the world extensively including N.Y.’s Lincoln Centre Festival, the Edinburgh Festival, San Sebastian Festival, Spain, Toronto World Stage Festival, Theatre de la Ville, Paris, the Barbican Centre, London, etc. As a painter, he has contributed to numerous exhibitions and his works are kept in museums and private collections. Over 50 books have been illustrated with Rezo Gabriadze’s graphic work. Rezo Gabriadze counts among his many international awards Commander of the Order of Arts and Letters of the French Republic. Gabriadze’s short stories have been published in several countries among them: Contemporary Georgian Fiction - Dalkey Archive Press 2013, USA; Georgian Fiction: Literatura Georgiana - Instituto Tlaxcalteca de la Cultura 2015, Mexico.
