DOCHANASHVILI GURAM

Born in Tbilisi in 1939, is a Georgian prose writer, a historian by profession, whose literary works have been popular since the 1970s. In 1957 he enrolled in the History Faculty of Tbilisi Ivane Javakhishvili State University. He was an active participant in archaeological excavations and played in the university orchestra. From 1962 to 1975, Guram Dochanashvili worked in the Archaeological Department of History at the Ivane Javakhishvili Archaeology and Ethnography Institute. From 1975 to 1985, he was head of the prose department of the journal Mnatobi and headed the prose section of the Academy of Sciences. Since 1985 he has been the main editor at the 'Georgian Film' studio. Guram Dochanashvili’s first short stories were printed in the journal 'Tsiskari' in 1961. From then on, his short stories and novels have been published regularly. Today, Guram Dochanashvili is one of the most popular writers in Georgia and his novel The First Robe has become a modern Georgian classic. In 2016, the composer Zaza Marjanishvili staged a project The First Robe, based on Dochanashvili’s novel of that name in the Georgian State Opera Theatre: it involved elements of operatic, ballet, graphic arts and drama. Dochanashvili’s short stories have been published in many countries among them: Contemporary Georgian Fiction - Dalkey Archive Press 2012, USA; Best European Fiction 2014 - Dalkey Archive Press, USA; Georgian Fiction: Literatura Georgiana - Instituto Tlaxcalteca de la Cultura 2015, Mexico; Georgian short stories from 20th century: Georgische Erzählungen des 20.
