SPIRAL

PANJIKIDZE GURAM

Main characteristic of Guram Panjikidze’s prose is dry, technocratic, laconic and dynamic style of storytelling, which evidently matches and vividly describes alienated world of characters with technical professions, who are generally inhabitants of big cities. Information about Modern Technologies and scientific achievements, that the reader gains from the dialogs between the leading characters, or their job descriptions are notable not only from the point of cognition but from the perspective of increasing interest towards less popular fields. Spiral, remains one of the best examples of Georgian Science Fiction Fantasy. The story covers an experimental case when a brain of a dying professor is implemented to a young person, who turns out to be a criminal. Who will be this person after the surgery? An old professor or a young criminal? Or just a new individual? The brain will capture the body or vice versa? The author masterly applies intrigue and thrilling plot, characterized for detective genre as a perfect background, to reveal his main idea and unfold existence issues of the protagonists, their attitude towards eternal values, death and life, belief and disbelief, friendship, love, and generally, essence of life. While introducing his characters Guram Panjikidze never uses banal and outdated metaphors, each feature that the author applies to depict his protagonists is accurate and often inferred from the urban surrounding. Writer precisely feels the time and epoch therefore eternal topics and questions are always discussed in relevance to modern spiritual crisis. The contrast of rational scientific thinking and abstract thinking - based on value system is one of the main quests and leading theme, which was first highlighted in the novel Year of the Active Sun and reached its peak in Spiral. His professional background in metallurgy and years of successful experience in journalism greatly influenced author’s authentic vision and was best exposed in his literary legacy which is a mix of philosophical perception of modernity and crafted storytelling, which does not lose its actuality, as its main value is a human being and his/her perpetual passions in parallel with scientific progress.
